HOW IT WORKS?

Creating a Legacy Forest with forest structural transformation, as well as by planting native tree seedlings is now in progress. Our goal is to create a forest which is resilient to climate change. Such forests are structurally diversified forests, consisting of several, native tree species. It is also important that the local communities can use this forest for sport activities and recreational purposes as an urban forest.
Due to the adverse effects of climate change, the health of trees in the area has significantly deteriorated. Carefully evaluating and replacing these trees with healthy, native seedlings will transform the area into a climate resilient forest in a long term. The mixed species forest will serve as an urban forest with recreational possibilities for 90-110 years.
The seedlings will be taken care and replaced as necessary during the first 6-8 years. After that, the work must be assessed and carried out every 10 years, e.g. the newly emerging invasive species must be eliminated.
By creating the Legacy Forest, we will create an urban forest for locals, contributing to the protection of the environment which preserves the legacy of the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
