The Hungarian Handball Forest Project is an environmental and sustainability initiative by the Hungarian Handball Federation, aimed at transforming forest structure and planting native tree saplings. Our goal is to create a multi-species, climate-resilient forest that local communities can use as an urban forest for sports and recreational purposes over the long term. To achieve carbon neutrality for the forest, we provide an opportunity to offset the carbon footprint of merchandising products available in the Hungarian Handball Federation's webshop. The funds raised will be entirely dedicated to the maintenance and further development of the Hungarian Handball Forest Project.
On October 11, with the help of Hungarian Handball Federation staff, we launched the project by planting 100 saplings and an additional native decorative tree. The planted species include native poplar, maple, and oak varieties, which are expected to absorb approximately 30 tons of carbon dioxide over the next 50 years. The long-term goal of the Hungarian Handball Federation is to promote sustainability and actively participate in environmental protection.
Due to the adverse effects of climate change, the health of the tree species in the area has significantly deteriorated. Thus, the reforestation effort includes rejuvenating the forest with native species. Each tree's health is individually assessed, and only identified unhealthy individuals are removed and replaced with long-term sustainable native species. The resulting mixed-species forest is expected to serve as an urban forest for 90-110 years, providing a natural, active recreation space for the local population.
During the first 6-8 years, the planted saplings will be cared for and replaced as needed. Following this period, a condition assessment and necessary maintenance, including the control of invasive species, will be conducted every 10 years.
The creation of the Hungarian Handball Forest will establish an urban forest area that preserves the environmental legacy of the Women's Handball European Championship, contributing to environmental protection and sustainability in the long run.
