The *Hungarian Handball Forest Project* is an environmental and sustainability initiative associated with the Women's Handball European Championship to be held in Hungary. This project involves forest structure transformation and the planting of native tree seedlings. Our goal is to create a multi-species forest that is resilient to climate change, which local communities can use long-term as an urban forest for sports and recreational purposes.
Due to the adverse effects of climate change, the health of tree species in the area has significantly deteriorated. Therefore, during the reforestation process, we will supplement the existing stock with the renewal of native tree species. Each tree's health will be individually assessed, and only the identified unhealthy specimens will be removed, which will be replaced with long-term sustainable native species. The resulting mixed-species forest is expected to serve as an urban forest for 90-110 years. This urban forest will provide the local population with a nature-friendly, active recreation opportunity.
The planted seedlings will be cared for and replaced as needed during the first 6-8 years, followed by assessments and any necessary maintenance work every 10 years, including the management of invasive tree species.
By implementing the *Hungarian Handball Forest*, we will create an urban forest area that preserves the environmental legacy of the Women's Handball European Championship for the long term, contributing to environmental protection and sustainability.
