Hungarian knowledge export implementation by Climate Action for Macedonian National Forestry – Public Enterprise Nacionalni sumi

Within the framework of the cooperation agreement, our goal is to create innovative forestry-ecological projects in Macedonia, also in the Western Balkan region, which we have already developed, applied and continue to apply in Hungary.

In September 2023, Climate Action CEO Dr. Gábor Gremsperger Jr. signed a cooperation agreement with the state forest holdings in Macedonia, officially known as National Forestry – Public Enterprise Nacionalni sumi – within the framework of which joint projects will be implemented.

Within the framework of the cooperation agreement, our goal is to create innovative forestry-ecological projects in Macedonia, also in the Western Balkan region, which we have already developed, applied and continue to apply in Hungary.

This will create a transfer of hungarian knowledge in the Western Balkan region. We are talking about innovative forest restructuring and ecological projects that are suitable to be part of the ESG strategy of enterprises as offsetting projects.

The application of these procedures is unprecedented in the Macedonian region, so in connection with this, a new form of support for Macedonian state forest holdings will be implemented through Climate Action. Through this, forest areas can be renovated and projects can be created, which greatly contribute to increasing the region's forest stocks, improving biodiversity and forest quality.

Climate Action developed the so-called offsetting projects in Hungary. The essence of this consists in the designation of forest areas of 5-10 ha, where the forest is surveyed. Bad, diseased, aged trees are harvested and the forest is replanted to create leaks, improving tree stocks and biodiversity. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the air is then determined. This is a groundbreaking procedure, as all calculation methods are not specifically "Europe compatible", as they are specialized in a much larger area.

Climate Action together with the Institute of Forestry Sciences has developed a calculation model as a result of a roughly 2-year research process that can calculate its carbon-absorbing capacity for small areas, up to 1 tree.

"Our goal is to reform forest management in the Macedonian region. In the process of cooperation in Macedonia, together with the state forest holdings, we identify types of projects for which we prepare and implement a forest management plan.
Subsequently, we will contact businesses and economic operators in the Macedonian region who will be able to contribute their support in the future to determine the carbon dioxide absorption capacity of the designated projects and to obtain as many certificates as possible."

"We would like to involve European Union and Hungarian-regional funding sources for the implementation of our projects and for further application opportunities. We consider it important to develop a common way of thinking between Hungary and Macedonia. The transfer of Hungarian knowledge is a very useful factor in order to exploit the potential of forest management through Hungarian knowledge. Another important research project is planned around the examination of the quality of propagating material and its import."
